Newbie will Apache run underneath Knoppix-Linux
have Knoppix running next step .. will the Apache system run work with it,, my system is win98

Well, Apache is actually included, so................ yes!
/usr/share/doc/apache/ for some info, but there are many tutorials on the web.
Just type localhost in your browser and you'll see if it's up and running. If not, try running /usr/sbin/apache

Apache loaded ? but not connecting
hmm, tried /usr/sbin/apache
then tried to access thru Mozilla got the following:
Alert
The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
tried Konqueror:
an error occured while loading http:/knoppix
could not connect with host knoppix

Ah, my bad!
Try
sudo /usr/sbin/apache (with a live CD) or
su to root and do:
/usr/sbin/apache
that should do it.

Thank fingers that got it (Apache) up
..now to figure out how all this unix stuff works and get PHP (and whatever else i'll need) installed to create web pages. still trying to shrink me dos fat32 to 50G..
plus have been reading some of the posts on how to configure the system so it is not attacked, alot to learn and keep a job at the same time..lol.. Any suggestion for a good game plane to start from...

You know you've got Apache, well, you've also got php4 and MySQL!
This is a pretty powerful combination, matched only (arguably) by Zope in the Open Source world.
And then, there's nothing AFAIK that you can do in Zope that you can't do in php.
But here, alas, my knowledge ends: it's 3 or 4 years since I played with either and I've forgotten just about everything!
Someone here should be able to set you on the right track: for myself, I'm not sure if the Apache/php/MySQL triad are configured to run together in Knoppix. Maybe a fresh posting with Apache/php/MySQL as the topic would do the trick -- but try a search first.
Some ideas on php here .
