Extremely Slow
Hi,
I am running Knoppix 3.7 but it runs painfully slow. It takes literally a few minutes to process simple stuff like load menus. My computer originally runs Windows XP Professional at 2GHz using a 40x CD-ROM. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

yeah... that happens when you run it off the cd... you can actually use the boot codes to run a lighter desktop... for example...
knoppix desktop=xfce
thats a light desktop, wont have the flashiest effects etc... but it will run a bit faster... because its lighter... but still will run slow...
or you could just do a hard drive install..

Yeah, I thought it would have been because it was running off the CD.
Thanks!

Your CD burn of Knoppix is probably bad. I run Knoppix 3.7 & 3.8 off of a Pentium3 500Mhz and it runs fine. You should read the downloading FAQ in the documentation where it describes how to check if the downloaded ISO is corrupt using MD5 sums. Then you will need to either burn the CDR at a slower speed of use different CDR media.
I hope this helps.

UnderScore, i got the same config, PIII 500Mhz. The CD *was* painfully slow, and so is my hd-install. Is there any way to disable the effects like transparency etc?
Could it be due a a file libcdda not being copied during install? Seems like the cd is spoilt at that part. However the everyting in knoppix is running normally, just painfully slow, to say it in the words of shing.
I got 3.8 Cebit edition, on a 3.5GB native hdd + 300 MB swap.
BTW whats the difference between Kanotix and Knoppix?
