Yamaha ISA 719 chipset Sound Card problem...........!

Hi,

I have a problem with my Yamaha ISA Sound Card (719 chipset).

My Knoppix software installed in my hard disk is KDE version 3.0.4 and kernel Linux version 2.4.19-xfs.

When I boot my PC and then it is entering in the Knoppix software the following message appears:

Informational - artsmessage

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver.
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device).

The sound server will continue using the null output device.


Please, what I can do to install properly my Yamaha ISA Sound Card....?

Open a root console and chmod +x /dev/dsp enter to make the device executable. You might also want to make sure you are a member of the audio groups (user console groups enter) if not in root console adduser username audio to add yourself. I had this problem myself try the chmod first, it seems that Debian does not make the device executable by default.

Also if you add yourself to the group you will have to logout and back in for it to take effect and you might want to add yourself to the cdrom group too.

Has your sound card ever worked? Either from the HD or from the CD. Just wondering if it's supported. If not, you might try the 4-9 release (that came out today) and try the alsa option at boot. Won't it be fun to play around with alsa now that it's available from the CD.
