Just off the top of my head, you may have one of 3 scenarios...
1) You've been hacked
2) Your HD is going bad
3) Something happened to /dev or /usr/bin/sudo
--My advice:
o Boot from the Knoppix CD
o ' time badblocks -c 128 -s -v /dev/hda ' or whatever disk you use.
o Backup any important files.
o Prepare to restore from backup (YOU DO have backups, right??) or reinstall. Depending on badblocks, you might have to buy another HD, but nothing is certain yet.
--Keep in touch, lemme know how it goes.

I get the impression that he is running from CD, not from the hard drive.
That makes both hard drive problems and hacking far less likely.

--Hmm. In that case, he's prolly got a bad ISO image, or a bad burn. Check the MD5sum, re-download if necessary, and re-burn.
