Ppkg / Apt Question - Option choosing

When installing downloaded packeages I sometimes get menus to choose options, for example locales or monitor resolutions. There is a list with a set of parentheses in fromt of the choices. The idea is to check which option(s) you want then tab to ok and exit.

How do you check the options? I've tried every key on the keyboard and can't a period, or an x or a + sign etc. Nothing will work. What am I doing wrong ?

The spacebar should work to select/deselect options in "ncurses"-based user interfaces.
