    HELP PLEASE !!!URGENT!!! LINUX COMMAND HELP

    My Windows PC is having serious problems, and it needs to be formatted.
    A friend of mine did this before using the Knoppix linux command prompt,
    and it worked perfectly, wiping my hard disk clean in a matter of seconds.
    Unfortunately, he moved away last year, and I need to do this again. If
    anyone knows the command(s) that i need to type in, please respond or
    email me ([email protected]) asap!

    Thanks for your assistance

    i would suggest using the windows cd to format and reinstall windows.

    as for the command cfdisk will do you if you just want to delete some partitions.

    either type man cfdisk (to read the cdisk manual) or press h when in cfdisk.

    What version of WinBlows?

    A Win boot disk should be able to delete your primary partition
    on your HD, then make a new one with fdisk & format it.
    I've seen Win screw up HDs SOOOOO badly that wiping out the
    partition is the ONLY WAY TO FIX IT, formatting just won't work.
    My friend & I argued about this & one day his PC was like this.
    WOULDN'T FORMAT NO MATTER WHAT! A partition wipe did it.
    After that & formatting it was back to normal ( Win... normal? ).

    Re: HELP PLEASE !!!URGENT!!! LINUX COMMAND HELP

    ' fdisk -l ' == List partitions

    ' dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=1M count=3 ' == Overwrite the 1st 3 megs with zeros

    NOTE: DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!! This will require a complete reformat. It doesn't wipe the entire HD, but should suffice for your purposes. You may also have to do an ' fdisk /mbr ' after this.

    MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP IMPORTANT DATA BEFORE PROCEEDING!!
