KNOPPIX booting into command prompt, HELP

i recently installed knoppix into HD on my compaq ARMADA, at first everthing worked fine. Then one fine day the laptop hung and i was forced to reset the laptop.

from that fateful day onwards, it only boots into command prompt and i have no way of making linux boot back into desktop GUI.

DESPERATELY SEARCHING FOR HELP !

Can you get to gui by typing startx from console?

If not, what is the error message?

StartX works....sorry it was a newbie question.

1) Open a console terminal.

2) Log in as root.

3) cd /etc

4) joe inittab

Look for the line id:5:initdefault: or id:3:initdefault: somewhere at the top.

It should be id:5:initdefault:

If not, change the number to 5.

5) save the file

6) reboot
