hello, my problem is: how do I set up a new mtu size for my DSL connection?

Knoppix 3.8.1

once I was able to change it to 1440 instead 1492 myself - but forgot how!

Login is correct - DNS servers are found by Knoppix - ADSL Configuration

Once I edited etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider, lower part by hand (from 1492 to 1440)

restart of pppd with poff , pon dsl-provider,

ifconfig ppp says same 1492 mtu ;-(

pppd mtu 1440 won`t work, too - just data garbage after command input

Would be pleased for any hints
