The following setup worked for me:
Averatec 3200M laptop
Knoppix 3.6
Netgear WAG511 wireless card (atheros chipset)

I needed to bringup the interface using "ifconfig ath0 up" and then get the DHCP address using "pump -i ath0" to get the wireless network up and running.
