    HOWTO? Install WASTE UltraVNC Nicotine

    i dont know how to complile and run stuff on linux
    andbody can help me understand how

    i am trying to install 3 things and dont know how

    WASTE (encrypted decentralized p2p)
    Nicotine (soulseek linux clone)
    UltraVNC (remote control)

    also once i learn how to install linux software how do i keep these on the boot cd setup?
    rebuild? and how

    Waste is available for linux at http://waste.sourceforge.net/. Go to the downloads & get waste-linux-1.5-beta-3.zip. You should be able to install & use this from Knoppix 3.9. Make a folder for waste in your home folder. Then extract it via ark (a GUI decompressor) or command line unzip. Then run it.

    cd $HOME
    mkdir waste
    cd waste
    unzip ../waste-linux-1.5-beta-3.zip
    ./waste

    Ultra@VNC is not used for Linux since it is a VNC variant for Windows OSs. Ultra@VNC is compatible with normal vnc and even uses the compressed tightvnc protocols. So instead of ultravnc you might use tightvnc.
    Assuming that you are running Knoppix 3.8.x because installing programs in Knoppix 3.9 is buggy & may crash the system.
    I go to http://packages.debian.org and search for tightvnc under ANY and I discover that it is in debian. So to install tightvnc on Knoppix 3.8.x (assuming the network is properly configured & the machine can access the internet) is as simple running two commands:

    apt-get update
    apt-get install tightvnc xtightvncviewer
    The total download size is about 12MB.

    I go to http://packages.debian.org and search for nicotine under ANY and I discover that it is in debian. So to install nicotine on Knoppix 3.8.x (assuming the network is properly configured & the machine can access the internet) is as simple updating the package lists then:

    apt-get install nicotine
    The total download size is about 2MB.

    As for keeping them on the CD: you can't. The CD is a write once & read many medium. You might be able to keep a persistant home but you will only be able to save packages there & you won't be able to install them to the readonly filesystem. Hopefully someon else will have a work around for you.

    thanks. so there isn't a way to dump the knoppix cd to the home dir and compile it with the added applications for a NEW knoppix disc image?

    There sure is & the process is called remastering. I wrote a HOWTO document about it called HOWTO: Remaster the easy way using menu based scripts.     great!

    i hope when i get home i can do all this

    would you happen to also know how to get LONG file names burned in k3b?
    ive tried all the settings i could think and it still truncates.

    one person recomended ziping the files. then burn copy off disc and extract as a method.
    and i hope to be able to network the Knoppix box to another workgroup PC.
