Not exactly a partial install, how about a full install where you get to select exactly the software that you really want? As an added bonus you'll get an install that doesn't break when you try to upgrade and that will actually work from hard disk rather than have you post lots of questions that start with "This worked from CD, why did it stop working after HD install". The answer is Debian, the real HD distro Knoppix is built from.
