wi-fi networking woes

Having trouble getting Knoppix 3.8 to get my wifi card to work in my HP tower. I've done the whole console advice I could find here: use su to get to root, iwconfig to set my essid and encryption key, and then pump -i to get the settings from the router, but knoppix refuses to find the signal. I know its there because I'm connecting right now using my Win Laptop not even a 2 feet way from the tower.

whats the output of iwlist scan and iwconfig from the client ?
