Harware detection, and build from scratch?
Can Knoppix be configured to boot from cd as usual, then detect hardware (as usual) then actually compile the desired packages from scratch to optimize for the specific hard to get the best performance possible. It's possible that this is what it does, I'm a complete noob to *nix.
thanks for any feedback!

Knoppix itself? No. What you have described is a build from source distribution while Knoppix is designed to be a pre-compiled boot from CD/DVD distro.. Examples of build from source distros are Gentoo, Source Mage, Lunar Linux, Linux From Scratch and Debian From Scratch. While I am sure it is possible to re-work Knoppix and the underlying Debian components into a build from source distro and it would be easier & less duplication of effort to use an existing build from source distro. Gentoo & LFS in particular have a large following of users & developers that provide good amounts of documentation, forums, & support.
