Change of Name : Knoppix Distro

we are trying to make a distro based on knoppix. My question is can we give this new distro our own name and if yes, do we have to take some kinda permission, and we need to, what is the procedure to do that.

please help me out

Practically all of us here are not Knoppix developers but are just community volunteers. If it is a question of legality, abiding by license terms, or a copyright issue, then it is probably best you speak with the developers. Some of the developers do visit these forums but you can contact the Knoppix developers at their mailing list at http://sympa.linuxtag.net/wws.

AFAIK knoppix as being based on GPL you can give it the name you want and no ask for permissions.
Maybe in some particular cases as for example a name very near to the original as "new-knoppix", "super-knoppix" etc. is better to write an e-mail to developers and ask about permissions/suggestions.

well we will be putting the name of linux in hindi which will be not even near the original name.

Ok, I'll take the bait. Why isn't the name of Linux, in hindi, still "Linux"? It's not like the name Linux translates into anything. Same for Knoppix.

ok i must appolozise for this.

what i actually wanted to say was that we will take some name in hindi which will be representing our linux "which we have remastered"
