need to move files from one part of drive to another

I'm trying to recover a WinXP installation.

Currently it simply gives me the option to boot into various Safe Modes. selecting any leads to some sort of reboot and again the prompt.

I've tried the recovery console but after doing that it stopped the error message i was getting but boot me in the safe mode cycle describe above.

My plan is to reinstall WinXP over the current WinXP. However that will delete the current user folder which is what i need to save. I figure (tell me if I'm wrong) if i put the "My Documents" folder i want in the root of my 'c' drive i should be able to install WinXP on the C Drive from there and then copy the My Documents folder to replace the system default one and all will be well again?

My problem with this plan is that apparently I don't have permissions enough to move anything on my drives. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this. I'm sure there must be a way to be able to move things around on the drives even if it won't solve my problem.

Drives formated NTFS will only mount as Read-Only because *nix can't safely write to a NTFS drive
you would need to resize the NTFS partition and create
a FAT32 Partition to copy the files to (a D: drive) that way they will be safe
for both *nix and Windows to read and safe from the Windows installer.

alright that sounds like it would work. plenty of HD space to do this in.. only how?

How do I create a new partition in Knoppix?

Repartitioning the drive when you want to rescue your data is not a very good idea. Do you have another computer running Windows and a LAN connection?

    ockham23 is very correct.

DO NOT PARTITION/RESIZE THE HD IF YOU INTEND TO RECOVER DATA. A resize might infact make you _lose_ data since there is aloways a chance of losing data when doing partition edits.

Like ockham23 said, see if you can get another PC/laptop on the same LAN then you can copy data from one to the other. If you can't then it might be necessary to get a USB flash memory stick & copy data to it or even remove the HD from the PC and take it to another PC where you can copy the data.

you misunderstsand if you think any flash drive would hold the data i need to recover. Looks like I'll have to abandon the partition idea if that's the case. what about moving the files. Is there anyway you can think of to allow me to move the files to such a position that when I install windows it won't be erased?

there are no other computers available to hold the data.

    Where are you? In Antarctica?

Seriously, use Knoppix to get your computer hooked up to another computer and back up your files.

it's my girlfriend's desktop she's in Orlando I'm in atlanta her roommate doesn't have a computer.. there's noone else really to get a computer from.

Guess i'll have to see about trying to repair. I'll her to give me the error message it gives and we'll try using the windows disk to repair again.
