sound-, grafik- and upgrade problem on installed knoppix

hi,

i have updated arts and since then no sound appears from there
normal sound output is working
but the soundserver....
... it´s running and programms put there soundoutput to the server
but there is nothing coming out of the speaker

why not??
how to fix it?


my grafikproblem is following:
i have a nvidia card installed with the right drivers
nearly everything is right
only the main console makesproblems
(the console coming up pushing strg+alt+f1...f4)
the text is shown as rectangle with a color
if i write something i cant read it
and if i enter i see the lines before going up
i cant read anything
everything normaly is text is rectangle

what is wrong and how to fix ??


and my last problem is the thing with upgrade
apt-get upgrade loads all packages which should be updated
but when it´s ready it stops and installs nothing

is this normal??
how can i upgrade right this or an other way ??

Are you sure the programs are putting their sound output to aRts? With xmms & xine you have to set up the output options to output to aRts. Otherwise, aRts daemon will hog the sound module & only releases it after the time delay set in the kde sound section of control centre, so xmms output will have nowhere to go until after the delay is up.
Do you have your kde events sounds working?

Be very careful with apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist upgrade, it may break your system & will almost certainly bend it a bit. At the very least it will change your startup procedure so that every available service will start up by default; even ones you don't want. Sometimes this will leave you with a non-functioning net connection since the new startup sequence will start dhcp then a later knoppix script shuts it down then is unable to restart it.

Far safer to upgrade only those packages you want to upgrade using the install command ( apt-get -t unstable install XXXX).

In answer to 'is this normal?, no it is not. It sounds like not all the packages downloaded completely. What was the last message apt gave before shutting down? If it was "Not all packages downloaded... (I forget the exact message)", simply re-run the apt-get command again until it completes all the downloads.

As soon as it has completely downloaded ALL the packages it needs, it will immediately start to install.

Don't forget to apt-get clean after it is done installing, otherwise the downloaded package will just sit in /var/cache/apt/archives taking up space, sometimes taking up LOTS of space.

arts was running ok before i made the update
after that nothing come out
and i set xmms up to play from arts
but nothing
and without arts and normal output in xmms it was function
i only made an update and after that and nothing resetup (before: arts function) nothing turns out
