Hard Drive Recognition

I am running the Live CD but when i boot it up it sees the hard drives but it says that they are all 390b which they are not and i can not open them in addition when i type in cfdisk /dev/hda to format a drive it gives me a fatal error.
is this a compatibility issue or can i just change settings or what

You're really not giving us much is anything to go on. What version of Knoppix? What make and model of hard disk (and type of interface)? What motherboard/computer?

AFAIK, cfdisk is used to partition a disk, not format it. But I can't explain the error.
