This isn't just in knoppix, my rh9 box does it too...

before anyone even tries: *yes the mixer is up *all the *way***. Everything is completely maxxed out on the mixer and there are no other knobs i can turn up. That's on all the OSS mixers and alsamixer.
I did have this problem too. The sound was fainted. But I think I solved this by moving the slider of the PCM volume a bit down. May be that'll help. I am not sure if it was PCM, but in any case try this with all of 'em that are maxed out by default .
