Persistent knoppix file inside ntfs partition
I'm enjoying knoppix right now with very minimal stumbling blocks.
i got hold of a 128mb usb key and saved a persistent knoppix file and config into the usb disk. big question:
What if i put this knoppix.img file into my hard drive that's NTFS (yeah, that nasty filesystem); can knoppix write inside this knoppix.img file or what? will it be dangerous to defy the "inter-filesystem-writing-laws" or will knoppix just ignore the existence of that file and just continue with writing on the ramdrive?
i also saw a MkImage-ct.exe and MkImg-de.exe on the dvd/cd itself, i wanna know if this is makes the same banana, knoppix.img
Much thanks,
david

I hope to have right understood your question.
You can put an .iso knoppix image the ntfs part., and then select the 'bootfrom' cheatcode at start. Either 'fromhd' and 'bootfrom' cheatcodes simulate the cd whay of working, so ntfs writings isssue doesn't matter, since ever ramdrive replace hd using this cheatcodes.

well, somehow i am booting from the iso inside the ntfs partition, my issue is the persistent home file, knoppix.img and knoppix.sh. i am not sure if knoppix would let me write on that .img file bec that file now resides on the ntfs.

Yes, you can. Based on my experience, it will work just fine. In fact, I have used the following setup on an NTFS filesystem:
C:\knx.382.iso
C:\knoppix.img
C:\knoppix.swp
Booted from the CD with boot: knoppix bootfrom=/dev/hda1/knx.382.iso and all worked well. Knoppix recognized the image file and swap file. From what I understand, writing to NTFS works as long as you don't add/remove a file or change the size of an existing file. BTW, this was using Knoppix v3.8.2. Don't know if this setup will work with other versions.
Give it a shot and let us know. Just be sure to make a backup of your NTFS drive, just in case.
