black screen

Hi folks
I saw many entries for this topic, but no real solution.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000:
PIII, 697 MHz
256M RAM
ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility M4 AGP
ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator (rev 10)

When I start Knoppix 3.4 (ct-version) everything works fine, but when I try the new 3.9 (downloaded iso) the screen getting black, when it comes to start the X Server. I tried different boot options, but nothing seams to work.

Any suggestions?

knoppix screen=1400x1050 depth=32
