Root won't accept blank password for HDD install

I am trying to install using knoppix-installer from the root terminal as per the FAQ but when I hit return at the password prompt (as instructed) it comes back with 'wrong password' ... any ideas?

Version 3.9 and booted from CD

Start the root terminal with K > KNOPPIX > Root shell. You shouldn't be asked for a password.
