hi all

my notebook's hd has crashed, and now i can't boot or install any system anymore. some hd sectors seem to be corrupt, and now i'm trying to rescue some data from it.

i booted the broken notebook with knoppix 3.6 and started the samba server. then i connect from a windows xp desktop to it and copy the files.

unfortunately the smb server seems to crash or something like that when a file is corrupt... anyway the network does not react anymore and i have to restart the whole knoppix to go on with my work.
After the restart the server is fast for a minute or so, and then it becomes damn slow again... it takes a minute or so to display a directory...
what could be wrong there?

btw where can i find disk diagnosis utilities on knoppix?

thanks a lot
josh
