At the risk of answering my own post in part,

I have upgraded Bios from 1.4 to 1.8 (easily done through Toshiba Website).

Knoppix now detects and mounts the USB flash drive as sda1.

Have not tried Belkin 8 in one card reader yet.

Moral to update Bios if any difficulty experiences
