    No Sound

Knoppix is unable to find the soundcard

I have a ESS Technology 1988 Alegro Soundcard

I checked in Control Center and looked for ESS in hardware, but wasn't listed, so I put it as Auto-Detect
Then I went to Soundcard Configuration, clicked OK to probe for PnP cards, then it says:
"You don't seem to be running any kernels with modular sound enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in module search path)
To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular sound, such as the kernel shipped with Debian GNU / Linux or a 2.2 kernel and sound must be compiled as modules.

I also use DamnSmallLinux and the sound works on there

heres what i get when ALSA is done configuring...

Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound_state.
    /usr/sbin/alsact1:save_state1163 No soundcards found...

Even though it found and configured the soundcard, why did it still say No Soundcards found?
Also the sound still doesn't work

    sound

    hey there
first, during the configuring -what driver did it find for your card
    is it?
    snd-card-maestro3

or is it some other driver

and what card did it configure
    and...
after configuring, use alsamixer and kmix to test the sound before saving
if by any chance your speakers are digital the check the analog/digital
in switches. again - test here for sound before saving settings and alsactl.

btw alsactl the last letter has an ell not a one.

    and...
    is it /var/lib/alsa/asound.state or /etc/asound.names - for alsactl -f
    and...
what does your lsmod say? see what driver is configured

    again
test with alsamixer to get sound before saving maybe with xmms

also delete kmix icon from the task bar (speaker w/ bar) and run kmix now there
should be a speaker icon without a bar. that would also indicate alsa is installed.

    in alsaconf it displayed:
    > maestro-3 for ESS Allegro-1
    > legacy for probing into non-PnP cards
    i chose maestro-3

    edit:

how do i make the proper commands for alsactl?
    i typed in alsactl --help
and i'm not sure how to do it
    alsactl --file #?????

    under lsmod
is shows a bunch of stuff but i'll just list whatever says maestro...
    snd_maestro3 0
    maestro3 1 (blank)

when i load alsamixer thru root it fails to load (No such device)
and kmix has a communication error: it probably crashed

    alsaconf

after the first display in alsaconf
did you wait for it to configure below
then the next 3 displays (dialog boxes)
press y on all configurations then wait
at the end until it reads alsa complete "enjoy"
    right

btw what version are you running?

    ]$ man alsactl
is a better study, however, this command is not necessary
    (for now)

    [ENTER]
Configuring snd-maestro3, do you want to modify .../sound? (and modprobe.conf if present?) YES (highlighted)[ENTER]
OK, sound driver is configured....(OK) [ENTER]

.....Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

    my bad

if you are not getting the alsamixer to work then try

    modprobe snd_maestro3

your sound modules may not be loaded
    now try your alsamixer
some configure smoothly and some are a ...

yes, i just have one soundcard.
Can't add anymore hardware, cuz my power supply is maxed out (only 145w)
plus i'm too scared of replacing the power thingy and making more upgrades, or untill i get a new PC and i'll mod the hell out of this old Compaq
