Kernel update

How do you update the kernel in a remaster?

I have kernel 2.4.27 in my remaster from Knoppix 3.7 and want to upgrade to 2.6.x. I tried apt-get, but there were errors writing the configs.

Anybody know how this is done?
Or even a dual boot kernel would be nice.
