knoppix live cd & modem dial up

hi all,

how do i do a modem dial up to internet with the live CD?

my pc has an internal modem and i would like to make use of the live cd (and modem) to do a dial up to internet...

sorry if it's a silly question... i'm new to knoppix live cd...

Internal modem - winmodem (software) or hardware? If it is winmodem, than it is very difficult, maybe imposible. You must install driver, what is not easy to do with Live CD. This is bad news.

Good news is that there are some other Linux distributions with integrated support for (some) winmodems, in Live and in installed version: Mepis, Kanotix, Kurumin, ALT...

sorry for not being clear... it's hardware - an internal modem card...

would knoppix live cd be able to detect (and configure, hopefully ) an internal modem card??...

There are realy hardware internal modems but today people call some non-hardware internal modems "hardware". Even manufacturers print on box "hardware", for example Sweex intel536 modem, wich is not hardware. Here is something that may help you, or not, but you will learn something for sure. I don't know what will hapen with Live CD.

"The 5610B works with Mepis 2004.06 and SM 3.3. I did nothing special. But you have to make sure you have it on the correct COM Port for your machine. Sometimes u have to confirm the com port via windoz - I hate to say that. You may have to link the port to /dev/modem.

Alternatively, try ls -l /dev/modem to find out the com port. You can also do things like ls -l /dev/ttyS2, etc. All from Command line. The latter gives the c 4 68 part of it. Also see man pages on ls. Watch the spaces in the code.

Two other handy pieces of code, from cmnd line as su:

mknod /devttyS2 c 4 68 Here S2 is COM3, etc.
(this sets S2)

ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem Links e.g. S2 to /dev/modem"
