If you need to unpack minirt.gz after creating the cpio image - :

gzip minirt.gz
cat minirt | (cpio -i -d -m; cpio -i -d -m)

Perhaps there is a better way, but this seems to work

Is that supposed to be 'gunzip minirt.gz' before that 'cat minirt'?
