proftpd help

i installed proftpd from apt-get, standalone, and set up a user called web. how do i use the user web to log in? it either waits or disconnects when i try to connect

ok, i got it configured playing around with access controls, and it connected, but i have the user "web" set to connect to /var/www and it times out before it gets to listing the files in www
