CD/DVD-Rom-Drives are not mountable

Hi,
I have a live-CD like Knoppix hd installation. But I can't mount my IDE optical drives /mnt/hdb (CD-RW drive) and /mnt/hdd (DVD-ROM drive). The error message is
$ mount /dev/hdd /mnt
/dev/hdd is no valid block oriented device (on-the-fly translation).

Can you help me please?
