how to get connection with usb modem?

I have given up trying all tricks to use the internal modem of my toshiba laptop to connect to the world. Seems to be not possible.
Ok Then I bought an external modem which exist nowadays only in the USB version unfortunately, could not find a serial one any more.
However while this modem works well under windows, it is simply ignored by linux. When I try to contact the modem, I am getting only some error msg not able to open modem. simply no reaction of the modem at all.

Tried on 3.6 and 3.7, both versions on my laptop installed, treid it from user and from root, nothing.

Can anybody tell me how to connect to internet by knoppix appart from full network connetcion?

Probably the most important thing is whether it is a software or controller based modem, there are usb versions of both. What is the make and model number of the modem?

it is not obvious what kind it is, it simply makes no reaction, what ever settings in Linux I try.

Yes the linmodems site I looked at before, but all there seems to be so complex, supposing me to build new kernels etc. Have not succeeded with my internal modem , this is why i did buy the external one.

How do you know from outside what kind of modem it is?

buy a SERIAl or ethernet modem the USB kinds rarely work well anyway.

Hmm, difficult to tell what modem is. I visited the Microspot website and a couple of their usb modems listed with pictures in the catalog files. This one

would appear to use the slmodem drivers. I can't tell aobout this one:

IIf it is the first, you might want to give Kanotix a try, as it is a close relative of knoppix with slmodem drivers included, and i believe a script for configuration .

If you open a root shell and type : lsusb , we should be able to tell if knoppix recognizes the modem and possibly the type of driver needed.

Serial modems are hard to find, have to look in e-bay , but new in the shop, no they seem not to be sold any more.

the present usb modem I have, tried with slax, knoppix, suse 9.3 but no luck, simply no answer at all.

is there something abt special config anywhre?

I am getting always answer ´can not open modem device´

Again, if you post the output from lsusb, we may be able to identify the chipset the modem uses. open a terminal and type: lsusb. The output should look like this:

It shows what devices are seen on the usb bus. In this example, the usb modem is the Conexant Systems entry. I works with 2.4 and some 2.6 kernels with the acm module (2.4) or cdc_acm (2.6) module loaded. It shows up as /dev/usb/ttyACM0 in kppp.
