You meant I have to issue ls -al to see the permission for the file,,,then to change the permission I have to type in:

chmod +w /mnt/hdb6/boot/grub/menu.lst or chmod +w /mnt/hdb6/boot/grub/menu.lst,,,,,,,,didn't you ?
