Is there another HTML editor on the knoppix distro, other than Mozilla's Composer.

Version 2.78 - an older version I got with the book " Moving to Linux "

Well that would explain the troubles you are having.
Get a newer version and all your perl scripts will work just like PHP.
Quanta Plus is an HTML editor that is included in Knoppix.
Bluefish used to be included as well.
After Knoppix 3.7 all versions use UnionFS to make all directories writeable.
This didn't work very well in version 3.9, but version 4.02 is OK.
Prior to this only directories such as /var/www which were loaded into RAM were writeable.
Directories that weren't loaded into RAM such as /usr/lib/cgi-bin were not writeable.

There are ways to solve the problems and make files writeable, but they are quite time consuming.

Actually, brass is giving you a wrong version number, there never was a Knoppix version 2.78. This is likely a version of some other part of Linux that he is seeing when Knoppix boots, but it is not the KNoppix version number that you asked about.
