hi,

there's a problem with my notebook on which i have windows xp professional installed. the file system is fat32. the day befor yesterday it crashed and i received the message KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR. since then i've used a knoppix live-cd and tried to find out what happened. unfortunately i haven't really been able to figure it out.

technichal information was
stop: 0x0000007A (0xE19E9880,0xC000000E,0xBF8B08CF,0x1AF70860)

i've read that the 2nd parameter is the important one, though i wasn't able to find out what it means in my case. normally there seem to be other codes in this place.

when i tried to mount the partitions of my hard disk with knoppix yesterday (mount -t vfat/dev/hda1/mnt), i received the message "konnte den superblock nicht finden" which means "wasn't able to find the superblock". unfortunately i don't know the exact message in english.
today at least the partition where i keep my data was mounted automatically. i could see all my folders and files, but wasn't able to open any of them.

i also tried fsck for all the partitions and got the following
root@1[knoppix]# fsck -f /dev/hda1
fsck 1.39-WIP (31-Dec-2005)

Read 512 bytes at 0:Input/output error

i also tried several times to run windows again. and one time it even worked, but it crashed immediately.

can anyone tell me what's wrong with my notebook and what i can try and do about it? do you need any other information?

Looks at first blush to be a problem with your hard drive. Either it's going bad or you may have a virus in your MBR. You could do a search in the MS Knowledge base for further info...couldn't hurt after all.

Sounds like the Master Boot Record (MBR) is corrupted. Since it is an XP installation, you could try the Windows recovery console. You stated that the file system is Fat32, so it might be fixable to some extent. Might even be able to use a Windows Millenium or 98SE boot disk and use FDisk switch /fixmbr or /MBR, It's been so long I forgot which. Search the Microsoft site for more information on this. The "Bad Superblock" reference usually points to an issue with the Windows MBR. As stated before by RandomGoon, it might also be a virus. If your partition is over about 32 Gig, it might be Windows XP limitations. It sometimes does not appear to play well with larger Fat32 partitions. It is not able to create/format one larger than 32 Gig, so there might be a reason.
