knoppix vga=0 debug -b 3 definitely shows launching X failing after I type startx. vga=0 is like the lowest and should work for all video cards and computers. Wow.
failsafe debug vga=769 worked for 640x480 256 colors.

Actually, you probably want to try different xmodule= cheatcodes rather than vga=. The vga= is only for text-mode, whereas xmodule= is for your X server. But if you do want try try out different vga= cheatcodes have a look at Tip #4.

For trying out various xmodule= cheatcodes you probably would want to just boot with boot: knoppix 3

which suggests that xorg has issues with the ATI RV350. That was back in April and don't know if those have been resolved, yet. I had a glance through the Xorg Radeon manual, but didn't see any obvious solution to your problem.

Cute, so it is a known bug. Is there a way just to use normal VGA/SVGA to be slow? Gah, ATI sucks.

In the thread the possible reason for this bug is also mentioned: Its the DRI module. The problem occurs obviously (in your, mine and their case) with a ATI radeon on a Athlon 64 CPU.

You can do the following (just checked, writing this in Knoppix with X on ATI driver):

Boot with "knoppix 2" to textmode.

Then edit (e.g., with joe) "/etc/X11/xorf.config" and place a "#" before the line where the module "dri" is listed (just search the file).

Finally start X with "startx" and see it working.

FYI. Same motherboard but different computer has the same problem because of ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder card (AGP; 128 MB). I had to use the workarounds.

Jochen: I finally tried this trick. It worked nicely. Fast too. I hope future versions won't have to require this.

Hello.

I've found that simply editing the xorg.conf file and editing out the "DRI" section still freezes my screen. I have the exact same motherboard, though i have a radeon 9800pro 256mb.

I have to edit Driver under "Device" section, and change it to fbdev...

With this, desktop works even with "DRI" section uncommented.

If the Device is ati or radeon my screen freezes(with the rest of the system), even if i comment out "DRI"

edit: I forgot, vesa also works but it disables dri anyway i guess
