Yes. Have a look at Tip #2 for a way to quickly try out different xmodules, including svga.

knoppix vga=0 debug -b 3 definitely shows launching X failing after I type startx. vga=0 is like the lowest and should work for all video cards and computers. Wow.
failsafe debug vga=769 worked for 640x480 256 colors.
