Unable to create fstab on bootup

I have a Toshiba laptop that is not booting after installing a windows update.

I wanted to try and fix it with Knoppix.

However when I try to start knoppix it hangs on creating the /etc/fstab.

I can boot up using "knoppix nofstab" but then none of the drives are viewable.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions?

Assuming that you are talking about XP, my suggestion is don't try to fix it. If you can get Knoppix to see the partition then use answer #5 to save any data that you need and reinstall fresh. See also answer #6.
