some sound some not

I have system sounds. (startup, shutdown, etc) but not sound on xine, xmms,or kaffeine.
starting alsa didn't help and I have the unchecked the artsd box in my sound config. can someone offfer
any suggestions?


knoppix 4.0 hd installed
dell 700m 512mg memory

fixed the problem by configuring xine settings
enabling expert mode and selecting audio device driver "arts"
