A problem

Sorry if i posted in the wrong place but couldn't see any "Bugs" topic . Now i dont know if this is a bug or i'm a dumbster , but here it goes. I've noticed that knoppix 5 comes with JRE/JDK 1.4x so i wanted to update to version 1.6 or 1.5 . Aparently installing these seems harder than i thought.
To be honest i dont know know what the problem is , i get this error "Cannot initiate VM " java /lang/NoClassDefFoundError : /java/lang/Object . I thought the problem is with the jdk but aparently it installs ok on fedora or suse with no problem so far . dont get it why . This are the steps i took to install it on knoppix
alien -d -v jdk6-package.rpm dpkg -i jdk6-package.deb , after this if i write in the terminal /usr/java/jdk6-folder/bin/java -version i get the error above . Has anyone had this problem ? Please i need a solution , Knoppix is the fastest linux i used so far , so i really like it , but java is a vital component
