downloading programs

[fredhughes]

After I have downloaded files from the net I end up with rpm or tar files but don't know how to extect them. I use Knoppix.

I am new to Knoppix as well.
Just a question: don't you see the downloaded files in the Synaptic Package Manager?
If not I am at a loss as well.
