Knoppix is installed to a virtual HD (50GB) ext3 with a 1GB swap setup

The problem is ALSA. It loads the correct modules for the VMWares Ensonig ES1371 sound card, but when it boots or i run alsaconf from a root console this scrolls by and sound is dead:

alsaconf finds the card fine. I tried using modprobe and forcing the load of an OSS driver, same thing.

KDE whines about not having /dev/dsp and if i do a makedev -v audio it never makes the directories to make the device block links.

CD/DVD iso boot, sound is fine, not that really matters.
