ran apt-get update yesterday. all went fine till there was an issue with debian "sarge" wodim. seems to conflict with cdrecord. any suggestions appreciated.

Wodim is a replacement for cdrecord. If you have upgraded to Wodim, the cdrecord that is installed is just a dummy package to smooth the transition to Wodim.
Use Wodim instead.
