install aps.. help me.

so.. i have a softmodded xbox, with knoppix linux. evrything runs fine, but i never used linux.
finaly i managed to start my internet connection, but.. a lot pages need flash player and / or java.
i have them downloaded, But what now? how to instal? i have searched the net, and found examples,
but none of the commands work...
so i need help on this. my kernel is knoppix 2.4.xxxxx cant remember.
i hope i get help..
i had a linux adventure with gentoo on my computer, but could not install it.
the gentoo forum solved my problem fast.. 2 post saying reed the fukkking docs, (wich i did, but it did not help), and an other post saying use win xp.

id Be glad to use it, but a modded xbox cant run win xp.

so i need to know how to install apps like flash player and java under knoppix.

Knoppix is a Live CD or DVD, so options for installing more applications are limited. If you're trying to "install Knoppix" to a hard disk, I consider that a blasphmy and will be no part of it, consider installing a distro like Debian that is suitable for hard disk install and which you can easily install applications to. If you are running form optical disc, then you might want to look at the Klik forum here for an interesting way to add some applications to Knoppix. If the applications that you are interested in are not available for Klik then you may want to look at the remastering forum for discussion on customizing Knoppix, which would include adding and removing applications.

Limited, but increasing. With Knoppix 5.01, because of the use of unionfs, it is possible to add a lot of applications to Knoppix, without the use of klik, and without needing to install to hard drive. I have done this lots of times, and added lots of debian packages. The added new apps go into ram, and will, of course, only last for the session, unless a persistent image is created.

I think this unionfs feature should be highlighted, because it will help people avoid being driven to the hard drive install in the mistaken belief that that is the only way to install new apps.

However if your Knoppix kernel is 2.4.xxxxx, you are probably using an older version of Knoppix which I am not familiar with, and may be does not use unionfs. You need to use Knoppix 5.01 to introduce new apps without the new for a hard drive install.

With Knoppix 5.01, adding flash and jre is quite straight forward. Go to the firefox plugins page and download the flash and jre package. Extract the flash package somewhere e.g. your desktop. Using a root shell, navigate to the location of the files and just do:

./flashplayer-installer

With sun jre, it is a single executable, just navigate to the location of the file and do:

./sun-java5-jre_1.5.....(complete the name of the file)

i have linux installed on my harddrive, so i gues inStalling new apps is more than possible.
how do i install .tar and other file types ? .tar doeS not seam to be executeable.

thx for your help by tHe way. will try to just execute java and flash.

it is to bed that no tutorials can be found on the internet thaT teach the evryday usage of linux..
forums on how to instal linux it sel do exists, but man... most of them just made me more confused..

trouble shooting guides are my favorites.. anno with gentoo i got stuck... rlt8139 lan card was not
detected... the trouble shooter guide only told to do a lspci or what.
lspci told me what i already figured out. lan card was not autodetected..

well, anyway, i would also like to know how non executeAble files can be installed.
such as .tar, ..deb, etc...

what gives if want to use opera as browser? the download menu does not shows knoppix, just
other distributions....

best would be a tutorial showing alll types that are installable (.tar, .deb...etc) with the methood to use
them.

On tar files, the flash player is a tar.gz To extract it, if you have the icon on the desktop, or in konqueror, just right click on the icon and select extract.

Note that when you run the flash- installer, it will ask you where the plugin folder of your browser is. Usually it wil be in /usr/lib. Firefox's is /usr/lib/firefox/plugin but I am not sure where the Opera one is. You can also not run the installer and manually install the plugin -- after extracting the tar.gz, you will have a folder with a few files (For example the readme will give you instructions how to run the installer). But the 2 important files are the .xpt and .so. These need to be copied to the plugin folders of your browsers.

For deb files. just click on the icon and the package manager will launch.


By the way, since you got your Knoppix running on an Xbox, could you share your experience of how this was done? I think some forum users here would be interested.

just do the xbox soft mod trick. it installs x-dsl, a linux with knoppix kernel 2.4.xxxx .
it says it is based on damn smal linux.
has some pre installd aps, good for browsing.
no java or flash player... but has mozilla firefox.
basic file player for mp3, avi, mpeg.
emelfm for file browsing,
and mydsl for downloading apps, but none of them works, except doom. tried at 30 others, but they wont work.not just on xbox, but on my computer.

ii downloaded flash tar s,file, it has no icon.
for deb files, if i click it, nothing happens.

any clue on what em i doing wrong?

Oh yes, I just remembered that your kernel version is 2.4.xxx which probably means your Knoppix is the early 3-series, like 3.4. In this case you may not have UNIONFS. You can tell if you do or not by looking at the root file system. If you see /UNIONFS, you have it. If you don't have UNIONFS, you cannot install packages the way I described above. Sorry.

You can either try a newer version of Knoppix (latest is 5.0.1), or else look around your CD for options. My oldest version is 3.4. On the Knoppix (Penguin) menu, there is Utilities -> Install software (while running from CD) -> flash-plugin. However I can't tell whether this will work or not. Didn't seem to work when I tried it. I'm afraid I can't advise much on the old versions as I don't use the old versions much.

You can also try klik -- see the forum section on klik.

The same thing is happening to me. I think it is a good idea to look in the Debian tutorial page.

Another way to install software that you downloaded in using "dpkg" command in Shell.

i.e. To install Flash. The file name would be something like "flash-7.0555-en-i386.deb"


dpkg -i flash

or

dpkg --install flash

and to uninstall use "-r" or "--remove" respectively.

Note: In using Linux, most of the times you need to be logged in as root in order to have privileges. You can also use "su" (super user) command to get the privileges.

Ok. Here we go!

My Knoppix is version 4.0

The easiest way to install software in Knoppix is to use Debian packages (software.deb) since Knoppix is a Debian derivative. In Knoppix "KPackage" is the package administrator like "Add/Remove programs" in Windows. You can find it in Menu K / System / Kpackage.

Make sure you have the right linux file version.


1-Right click on your ".deb" package.
2-Go to "Open with..."
3-Find "KPackage" (usually under "home/your account/System"), select it then press OK.

This opens "Kpackage" showing the program we clicked on before. Now you have a window divided in two sides. The left side shows the programs path and the right side shows the program's detailed info.

4-On left side. Select the progam itself.
5-On the botom of the right side. Click on the install button.

It's installing by now...

After the installation you'll find your program's icon in "Menu K" depending on the kind of software you install. i.e A internet browser would be in "Menu K" under "Internet menu".

Another way to do all this is

-Open "KPackage" (under Menu K/System/KPackage)
-Once in KPackage go to "File menu", "Find package..."
-Type the program or package you want to install ant click on "Find"
-Do steps 4 and 5.


KPackage also helps to update or uninstall software.
