Knoppix halts during HD install

Greetings from the edge of the world.
Today I am breaking the windows on a Toshiba Satellite 1005-s157.
The LIVE ran spiffy but when the install hits ~40-44% it stalls and freezes.
Repeated the experiment 5 times, reformatting the HD, repartitioning etc trying to find a hole but no penguin.

It is NOT just Knoppix.
Slax/SlaxKB/does the same at ~40% !????!!
Going to try all the LIVE's we have here today.

Anyone else had this? Any ideas?

Some live CDs are better than Knoppix when it comes to installing to hard disk, but why use a Live CD at all when you want an installed system? Why not do a net-install of Debian Etch (I pick that only because you seem to like Knoppix and it is Debian based, there are other good distros too) and then install exactly what software you want on your system?

Why? Cause I have an itty bitty straw (24.6Kbps) and I have 0 experience with Net install so I never thought of it. Thanks.
The main reason we are after Knoppix is the the gals we are weening of windows have used (and like) Knoppix on our desktops and wanted it.

Anyway....
We tried Morphix and Lite, and then Peanut, with no penguin but when we tried BBC we noticed that it was hanging up on the SCSI setup. So we used DSL (2.4x kernel) in "expert" mode and bypassed the SCSI set up and got the install.

We looked up the "sim70: RCXXXXX????XXXXXXXXXXX" that was hanging it up and found the discussion centers around older hardware but Knot a Klew what to Kdo

My new question is can I now upgrade DSL to Knoppix VIA the modem?

We are DLing DSLN (2.6x kernel) to see if it can be installed but I suspect there must be an equivalent "expert" mode in Knoppix KnO???

Greetings. Yea, 24 K would make the net-install impratical, and makes apt-get for applications more of an issue also. Assuming that you can't take the computer to a high speed connection, you might want to consider downloading one or more of the install CDs (or DVDs) at a high speed connection and burn them and install from that. You only need the first CD, although there are currently 21 CDs in the Debian Etch distribution, and the more you have the more software you can install without needing to download it from the Internet. Still, the discs are sorted by software popularity, so only the first 1, 2 or 3 CDs should cover almost all of the software that you are likely to want. I certainly would not recommend downloading and burning the full 21 CD set. And I would suggest using Etch; Sarge is way too old for most users.

I don't think it's even meaningful to talk about "upgrading" DSL to Knoppix. Although DSL is knoppix based they have diverged and are different beasts. On the bright side DSL (and DSLN) are apparently better suited for installing, and DSL support it's own interesting Klik-like package system. But I would still suggest the most desirable approach would be to install a real hard disk distro like Debian and then the applications that you want. Yes, hard to do at 24K though.

All of the problems I've seem here on installing Knoppix for several years bias me against ever suggesting installing Knoppix. It is very problem prone and not for the faint of heart. I think you'll be much better off with a different distro like DSL if you don't get Debian CDs.

We have 21 Megs of DSLN down!! WooooHoo!

A close questioning reveals that it is the KDE desktop and Galaga that are important to them.

So any distro with KDE will pretty much work for what they want.
The problem is still the older hardware. Ubuntu/Edu/Kub 6.1 all fail the same way.
We cant figure out if its the SCSI bypass or the kernel version but we dont have any other 2.4x kernal distros with "expert" mode here to test that.

Going to read up on install options today and see if we can find a way.
