persistent disk errors during boot

Hello to all,
I'd appreciate if someone could tell me
why knoppix.img is getting errors?

These messages appear on every boot and I shutdown my pc correctly.

/media/hda7/knoppix.img was not cleanly umounted. check forced.

Any ideas why knoppix.img isn't unmounting properly?

Just speculation, but likely causes include:

• Bad download. Did you check the md5 sum before burning? Did you use a mirror rather than error correcting BitTorrent?
  
  High Speed burn.
  
  Bad Media.
  
  Dirty or marginal optics in the drive.

i've booted from the bootcd and typed
"knoppix testcd" to check that out

"Everything looks OK" he says

Other ideas?

If testcd reports a problem then there is certainly a problem. I personally don't believe that it passing confirms that the disc is good. You didn't address the things that I mentioned. My current guess is that the md5 is likely good, as a bad md5 almost always (but not always) would produce an error during testcd. You didn't address the issue of a high speed burn at all. If you burnt at high speed, try burning at 4x, or better yet burn to a 4x CD-RW (not one of those expensive 10-20X high speed CD-RWs). I say better yet because using CD-RW media causes a change in automatic gain settings in the drive during reading that might help get you past other issues such as marginal optics.

I didn't expect that it was an md5 issue at this point, although it's always a good thing to check, and extremely important if using a mirror rather than BitTorrent.

I did expect the low speed burn to be the issue, rather a shock that it isn't.

What else can I try?

I would start with typing knoppix nodma at the prompt and see if that changes things.

When it doesn't, I would wonder about the drive hardware. Is this a desktop, and if so does it have another drive that you could use? If the BIOS only boots from the first drive you could use SBM to force a boot from another drive. Or in my case I would even consider swapping another drive in.

I would also consider posting detailed specs on what system you are trying to boot on, maybe someone else will spot something. And, of course, I would take that 4x CD to another computer and make sure it booted there (I twice got a pack of name brand Sony CDR media (different batches) that were all bad or went bad after recording, and have a friend who got such a Sony pack too.)

A couple of additional thoughts: if the computer is a desktop. make sure all drives are jumpered properly for master/slave. If the CD drive is the only drive on the cable make sure it's plugged into the end og the cable, not the middle connection (proper bus termination issue). And at this point, If you have a spare, I would even consider swapping the drive cable out, assuming it's an ide drive. I would also check 5 and 12 volts while I was checking everything else.

Ok, I can confirm that I also get errors on my laptop.

I just don't get it. I can boot from this livecd use fluxbox
open as many apps as I want and shut the system down.
Reboot with "home=scan"

Does knoppix.img have to created on a ext2/ext3 partition?
I have tested with NTFS and Fat32 only.

Meanwhile I'm downloading the iso again.
This time I'll choose a different server, burn to a different brand cd at the lowest speed possible
using another cd-recorder.
I'll even compare both isos and have them checked with the md5s.

As always if you got another idea to solve this just let me know
