Linux Keyboard test

Hi,
Was wondering if there is a Linux program out there that allows a user to manually test keys on a keyboard. We made our own custom Knoppix bootable CD for the purposes of obtaining computer and laptop specifications. Because laptops have built-in keyboards, we need to test the functionality of the keys. We've located a couple of Windows and DOS based programs, but nothing available for Linux. We could setup a dual boot with a DOS based tool, but this would be time consuming. Our Knoppix version has stripped out the GUI environment to speed up the boot process. We currently operate with a terminal based menu system. I was thinking of a Macromedia/Adobe Flash application but without a GUI, can't do much. Coding the Flash version would also be very tedious and some keyboard keys might not be available as "capturable" key presses.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Perhaps you would like to try some games as tuxtype or klettres.. or try lletters.

Thanks for the idea. This will test the letters, but not the other keys such as arrows, F keys, punctuations etc.

there is a "key capture" program for linux, I have used it to remap the Windows keys and such to other fuctions in linux.
xev is one i have used,
xbindkeys xbindkeys_config are two (one really) you can try
