apt-get install is not working

I just installed Knoppix to my beater Inspiron 1100 laptop and apt-get install is not working.
I previously had Knoppix installed and apt-get would work. Now it starts up but nothing happends.
Here is the output:

apt-get upgrade firefox
Reading package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded

Did you do "apt-get update" first?
