There are two CD versions on the site. One has virtualization software on it. The other (which I used) doesn't, but it's bigger, so I suppose it has more apps on it. Try that one if you haven't already.

I used it every day for the very same reason: I do not have a DVD/CD on my machines and iso boot is much faster as well...
    Hope this helps,

thanks for that link Gilles. Yes .iso grub boot is preferable but I still Havent found time to wrap my head around the whole long thread. A short conscise summary how to would be nice.
Can someone confirm that the japanese CD will boot the DVD.iso

    5.3.1 DVD applications

I just got Knoppix version 5.3.1 DVD running, and I 'm very impressed with the amount of software that comes with it.

Is there a list of the applications included and description of what they do?

    Thanks,
    Jwilli

Well, yea. It's named packages-dvd.txt and it came with your torrent download. If you didn't download via BitTorrent, shame on you, but I would expect the file to be on the mirrors also.

Verifying of md5 checksum and burning a CD at slow speed are important.

So has there been any OFFICIAL word from Klaus that there will NOT be a CD version?

NB: this Knoppix.DVD.iso at over 4 gig will NOT download to or copy to a FAT32 partition no matter how much free space is available on the partition.

    Hello,
Please find below the link to my first shoot at an updated Knoppix 5.3.1 minirt supporting ISO boot from ntfs, fat, ext, reiser,...
    http://s94002264.onlinehome.us/grub/knx531.zip (Md5: 5516434f6c74b3fd3f7cb941de6edd47 *knx531.zip )
For your convenience, the zip file includes: grldr, grub.exe, menu.lst, linux (kernel) and minirt_531.gz.
Please note that as requested by John Woods, I also included the "ntfs_rw" kernel cheatcode
(besides all the previously added cheatcodes as hostname=[mycustomname|auto-clock|auto-mac], ...)
FYI, this is the grub menu.lst config file I used:

    Code:
title Knoppix 5.3.1 from sda1 ISO
    kernel (hd0,0)/boot/knoppix.531/linux ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init bootfrom=/dev/hda1/boot/knoppix.531/*.iso vga=791 noprompt apm=power-off nomce quiet lang=us dma screen=1024x768 hostname=knx531 highres=off loglevel=0 libata.atapi_enabled=1 SELINUX_INIT=NO nmi_watchdog=0 ntfs_rw
    initrd (hd0,0)/boot/knoppix.531/minirt_531.gz
    boot

Have fun and please provide some feedback !
    Best Regards,
    Gilles

So as of now something is better than nothing.
The idea that there is a team working on Knoppix is my sole criticism w/ this master tech: I think this great project is a one-man show, hence the long break bet releases. So you get whatever you get, whenever it appears. Knopper obviously has huge tech skills and vision, but really needs to find a modest team and delegate some of work to others....

On my computer at least, if in the menu.lst of grub you change vga=791 to vga=785 you will no longer be told that you have passed a invalid code during the boot process every time you boot up.
