Thread: Knoppix 5.3

  1. #51
Yeah! I hope there is a CD version of 5.3.x really soon. I've made an attempt to build a CD version of 5.3.1 but I ran into a few problems. I even posted here on this forum to get some help but at the time of writing this reply, I have not have not gotten any responses. Here the link.

Here's the official website of that project:
    http://www.rcis.aist.go.jp/project/knoppix/
It's in Japanese, so you will probably need to translate with something like Google.

Here's how to make a modified version of the KNOPPIX Japanese Edition ISO that defaults to English:
(Note: run all these commands as root.)
    1. Download the CD image knoppix_v5.3.1CD_20080326-20080520-AC.iso from the web site (http://www.rcis.aist.go.jp/project/knoppix/.) A torrent is also available.
    2. Mount the ISO, copy the contents, unmount it, and change to read-write.
    Code:
    mkdir knoppix2
    mount -o loop knoppix_v5.3.1CD_20080326-20080520-AC.iso knoppix2
    cp -r knoppix2 knoppix
    umount knoppix2
    rmdir knoppix2
    chmod +w -R knoppix
    3. Edit the isolinux.cfg to make the default language "us":
    Code:
    perl -pi -e 's/lang=jp/lang=us/g' knoppix/boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg
    perl -pi -e 's/lang=ja/lang=us/g' knoppix/boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg
    4. Regenerate the md5sums (optional but recommended):
    Code:
    cd knoppix
find -type f -not -name md5sums -not -name boot.cat -not -name isolinux.bin \
    -exec md5sum '{}' \; > KNOPPIX/md5sums
    cd ..
    5. Make the ISO image.
    Code:
    genisoimage -pad -l -r -J -v -V "KNOPPIX" -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 \
    -boot-info-table -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat \
    -hide-rr-moved -o knoppix.iso knoppix
    6. Burn to a CD and enjoy!

Thanks to maybeway36 for showing me how to manipulate the .iso to change the language. The proceedure ran faultlessly.

I have been around Unix-Linux-Knoppix for a long time and never realized that mount could do such wizardry.

    Thanks Again,
    Don

Yeah that iso is cool, but it's not quite the thing.

First off, that isolinux.cfg remaster tip is the fastest tuorial I've seen. Very nice.

But I just want to give me two cents on that iso. I recognize these guys from the "quick boot" version of a few years ago and I used their stuff to play with virtualization. Totally appreciate the work and made a half dozen copies and played with it. Not surprisingly, I found that it was a little bit different than what I'd expect from the official CD.

First off --no Midnight Commander. I don't know what it is with Asian remasters, but they always dump MC. I use a variety of Taiwanese remasters and they never include MC which makes them painful to use for me. Next, of course they have their own grub setup to inclue all the virtualization options. That's cool and it's less of an issue with that short and sweet isolinux.cfg remaster tip since you can set the default to be whatever you want but I'd still prefer to have the official Knoppix grub screens along with the freeDOS boot which I found useful for dealing with troublesome FAT partitions. Also, I found that something weird was going on with the samba. I have to type in IPs to get samba connects. Again, I think that has something to do with the virtualization stuff on that particular iso.

So yeah it's cool. Nice little preview I suppose but not quite the same as a new official Knoppix CD release. It was nice to see that basically not much has changed. I'm wondering if mencoder makes it into the final CD release. I see the ffmpeg is on that Japanese iso and I guess that's what K3B is using for a DVD ripper. Mencoder and transcode would be nice though.

CD version is really a life saver . I think I will be able to continue my project for another year without shifting to any other option.

Thanks to the team who has done this work.

    5.3.1 xen cd

yes, I miss MC as well
I just thought I would let everyone know it was available.
Having tried it for a while now, I am sticking with 5.1.1

I thought 5.3.1 would have kde4, but it doesn't so I can't see any other benefit.
I can't imangine running virtualisation from a live cd, and having installed it on a test system,
it always reboots the wrong kernel and setting up vbox is only 1.5.6 and I am using 1.6 elsewhere already.

Nice to see it, to see it nice, but it doesn't do what 5.1.1 does for me already!

May be a CD version from Klaus knopper's team would have been much more useful, but atleast it gives a base to people who are using extensively remastered versions of knoppix. I actually wanted to create a CD from DVD found it a tedious and time taking job.

So as of now something is better than nothing.
