how to freeze boot screen to enter commands

Hi, how can I freeze the boot screen in order to enter commands like: tohd=/dev/sda1 ?
After inserting Knoppix CD, the boot screen stays just for a few seconds, then desktop appears.

as soon as you touch any key on the keyboard when the Boot: line is shown it should freeze and await your instructions.
if it does not, uhm you using some kind of wireless keyboard or such?
