I have downloaded the updated KNOPPIX and before burning it I can view the contents of the CD. Can I remove anything from the ISO to make it smaller before I burn it?

You can re-master the CD to remove software. In the posts above the java you want is included and you should be able to boot from the CD and connect via dhcp that is already running on your gateway machine.
